Conflict counseling and Mediation

Subheadline

When two parties clash ...

Conflicts are as old as humanity itself. They can be healing and propel processes and (working) relationships forward. Or they can become entrenched. When two or more parties are in conflict and cannot find a solution, a ComTeam mediator can step in. Without any personal interests, we work in conflict consulting in a pragmatic, solution-oriented manner with all parties involved.

Setting the Framework: Conflict Consulting with ComTeam

After clarifying the facts, we first contact the parties involved, informing them about the approach and the time required. If meetings are arranged, they usually take place in a neutral location, which could be at ComTeam premises or on-site. If there are developments during the resolution process, information about them, the outcomes, and agreed steps are communicated by the parties involved, for example, to the responsible manager.

The number of meetings required often depends on the duration of the conflict: the longer a conflict has been simmering, the more time generally needs to be allocated. In such cases, multiple meetings may be necessary. If the conflict is current and has no long history, it is often resolved in a single meeting. Another factor is the number of participants: In team conflicts involving many different positions, this can also affect the duration of the process.

Our clear goal in conflict consulting is to help the parties relearn how to build a sustainable working relationship and a different way of communicating in everyday life. If needed, we are here to support you as experienced ComTeam mediators.

Our approach to mediation

Conflicts are part of life and are essential to drive things forward and “clear the air.” However, some conflicts do not lead to solutions but rather to more or less irreconcilable opposing positions: this is when resources are wasted, and the confrontation becomes a meaningless ritual.

This is where mediation helps. Solution-oriented, pragmatic, and allied with all parties, an external person can facilitate.

Mediation as accompanying conflict consulting is helpful in many ways

  • Mediation is a pragmatic approach to negotiating different interests or resolving conflicts. The focus is on finding solutions and agreements that work. This approach succeeds when the shared interest in a solution is greater than the benefit of a failed negotiation.
  • Mediation creates solutions without losers. Mediation means working with the negotiating parties to develop solutions that result in a “win-win situation.” The aim of the process is to find ways that are satisfactory for all parties and thus can be effective in the long term.
  • Mediation builds trust. The process helps parties recognise the interests, needs, and motivations behind positions and thus fosters understanding for the other’s standpoint. By identifying interests and the respect for the other’s interests created through mediation, a foundation is laid for new solution ideas. This gives the parties the opportunity to move from the past to the future, from conflict to resolution.
  • Mediation is impartial. A mediator is neutral and impartial. They have no vested interest in a specific outcome. The goal is a result that all parties agree on. The role of the mediator builds trust among the participants and ensures balanced speaking opportunities. Moreover, they organise the process and structure the work on solutions. Mediators have no power and make no decisions.

With many years of experience, we are trained and professional guides in mediation and conflict consulting: Our mediation experience encompasses contentious project situations, conflicts between employees and senior staff, conflicts within and between teams, and conflicts in leadership bodies.
